What is Data Science?

Data science is a term that has existed for over thirty years now. The basic purpose of it is to study relevant data and derive information from it. To put it in perspective, data is available in two forms
Structured data – data is collected from various sources depending on the requirement. This is later organized in a orderly manner.

Unstructured data – data is collected from various sources but is stored or presented in an unstructured or unorganized form.

It is also a composition of various techniques belonging to other fields such as

Statistics – this Field deals with collection of data, analysis, interpretation, organization and presentation of data.Statistics is relevant in fields of astronomy, economics, education, engineering, marketing, medicine, public health, sports, biology, genetics, psychology etc.

Data mining–refers to going through large amounts of data through different perspectives to derive new information. This technique may also be used to gather and organize information.
E.g. ever wonder how big retail companies target the right audience? As in people who might actually be interested in buying their products. Simple, they go through volumes of data available with them of customer’s previous buying patterns. The customers are also categorized accordingly. Hence, next time the company wants to push a product they know exactly who to target.

Predictive analysis – this method refers to going through the available information and attempting to
predict the future consequences.Thesepredictions include all the off-course events that might occur.
E.g. R&D team, they understand the current situation first and then try to fix the flaws in it. They also try to predict the future needs, harnessing of solar energy lead to the discovery of solar panels. Now there is growing demand for this industry all over the world. Some of it is due to necessity, in an area where electricity supply is irregular, solar energy comes in handy.

We train our students to deal with any situation, think ahead of time and deal with the competition. Our job is the make people capable and not just confer a degree upon them.

Three simple steps for good business analysis

Some people are born analyst some people acquire it and if you belong to the latter half, this piece of writing may help you out. To be a good analyst of any kind some simple steps need to be taken. Along with the steps a strict discipline also needs to be maintained.

Communication skill
The basic requirement of any job is to be able to communicate. If this skill is mastered than half the task is accomplished. Business analysis after all is consuming data and emitting information.

How to improve communication skills?
Body language
Non-verbal movements can reveal more than what a person has to say. it is always important to use appropriate body language depending on the mood. It is easy to tell if one is nervousness or not by observing the body movement, little eye contact, blocking, neck rubbing are just some signs of nervousness. So pay attention to the body language while talking to others.

Don’t use conversation fillers
Do not use conversation fillers such as like, ummm…., ah… etc. this gives out a wrong impression and makes it hard for the listener to be serious.

Listen carefully to others
One of the most effective ways to converse is by listening to what the other person has to say. That way asking redundant questions can be avoided.

Be specific
A good business analyst put forward an idea with clarity. Nobody likes to listen to someone beat around the bush, always be direct and clear as it saves time and resources.

Problem solving
People like results and not problems. That is why they hire business analyst to find out exactly what is the solution to the problem their business is facing? Business analyst has the ability to detect problems and introduce techniques to gain efficiency.

How to improve problem solving skills?
Open mindedness
Try to chalk out all the possible solutions, no matter how ‘ridiculous’ they sound because many a times these answers may lead to potential solutions. Just go with the flow and try to be as creative as possible (after all problems don’t exactly come in practical proportions, why should the answers)

Make things simple, Dummy!
Don’t be intimidated by problems simplify them and start working on a solution. Try to dissect the problem this will take away nervousness and boost confidence.

Focus!
Stop focusing on the problem! But rather shift it to finding a solution. There is no point lamenting on what has happened.

Analyze
Don’t ever blindly accept anything at the face value; always try to read between the lines (only for the Bros, Avoid thinking with your little head!).

How to improve Analyzing skills?
Puzzles
Math problems, mind binders, riddles encourage your mind to think in a particular manner. Finding answers becomes an instinctive. Regularly using puzzles helps one develop to think fast.

Observe& Investigate (Key Quality)
Try to see what’s going on around, observe the minute details and question them. Try to find out why it is done the way it is done. E.g. why are man-hole covers round and not any other shape like square or a rectangle?
